Finding that Balance ..

So, this is something that I’ve not been so good at lately .. finding that balance.

A little background.

Over the past few months I’ve moved too many pieces to my life puzzle … I’ve changed my teaching schedule a bit (for the better) but have still been subbing way too often (I just don’t know how to say no..).

The big item is that I’ve searched, visited, found, and purchased my next home. Anyone who has gone through that knows that it’s a big undertaking. I’ve been trying to pack and purge the last 14 years of my life (OMG the closets are never ending ..!!)that are in my current home.

I’m now trying to meet, plan, and proceed with renovations that I want to do to the house before I move in. Next up I have to order the flooring, kitchen, etc that I want for the contractors to install, which is stressful.

Then, the fun part .. not .. moving houses. I am dreading that but I think I still have about a month or so before that happens. Next up I have to prepare my current house to sell.

Argh …

So .. to my point. Lots of moving parts but you know what, we all have them. We have troubles, stresses, positives, focuses, achievements .. so my ordeal is not much different than anyone else’s. life.

My downfall is that I have let the chaos take me on a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve slacked off on things that are important to me because I’ve been working on other things. Yes, those things (like packing and purging) ARE important but we have to learn to balance the needs with the wants .. or the end results may not be what we had hoped for.

What could happen?

Ah .. we could crash and burn out, losing all motivation for everything. Too much work, too much focus, and no breaks.

We could lose ourselves in the confusion, leading us to stop making progress because we’ve lost site of the end goals.

We could just stop caring just to ‘get it done’ … now the quality and efforts that we were maintaining will take a nose dive.

.. … well, none of that sounds good to me.

I’ve had moments where I’ve just needed a big nap. I look up and I lost hours of time. I have had moments where I’ve been completely unproductive, which does me NO good. I keep telling myself that ‘suck it up’ and soon you’ll be moved and you can get back to normal.

But I’m missing the point…

We add in curveballs all the time. We need to maintain our stance and adjust our swing a bit. Then take off running with the momentum we have always had.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

This is a topic that I am not so good with, in some cases .. comfort zone.

When it comes to fitness I am ok with pushing myself way outside of my comfort zone because I walk in with that confidence that I can successfully do so. Other things .. not so much.

Why should we not step outside of our comfort zone?

There are quite  few unknowns with it. It’s a leap of faith and sometimes the result is not what we expected or wanted.

Why should we step outside of our comfort zone?

The result may change who we are as a person for the better. Maybe we get stronger, have better perspective, learn invaluable lessons from it, or gain a new level of personal confidence.

We all started out at one ‘level’ in life and by taking chances we have gotten to where we are now. The only way we can improve upon our ‘today’ self is to roll the dice and see what happens. If we are stronger enough on the inside then we are capable of getting uncomfortable.

Learning to Have Filters, Sometimes …

There is that common joke out there about the husband and the wife. The wife is sitting there, complaining about this, complaining and that, and so on to the husband. He’s sitting there as if he’s listening to her. She asks him a question and his mind is blank. He was filtering her out. Now she’s even madder and starting over .. 🙂

Maybe that is not the type of filtering that I am referring to .. completely .. but sometimes it is worthwhile to have a few filters on.

I believe that every day we wake up and make a series of choices on how we choose to live and feel about our day. Even though we make choices there may be a series of unexpected obstacles that get in our way.

These obstacles may be from yourself, a parent, a spouse, money, school, or something else altogether.

While we definitely don’t want to ‘ignore’ that issues I think it’s important to not let them burden us more than they have to at one time. Sometimes we can only shoulder so much at once so that we can take it in, manage it, and correct it (if that’s an option). They we can handle more.

We should deal with obstacles in life by filtering them in .. in reasonable quantities. Break them into smaller, manageable pieces.

When they say “Run” they don’t mean “Run”

I have been working with my coworker for a couple of years now. He’s tried every diet and every exercise habit you should, and should not, try.

A few times he tried to run .. and failed. He did the couch to 5k plan and, like most people, freaked out at week 5 day 3 and stopped.

He’s a contractor and lately has been working remotely from home until last week. When he came in we were playing ‘catch up’ on how things have been. He mentions that he’s been running and has found a bit of enjoyment out of it.

WHAT?

WHAT?

What did he do? He learned that running did not mean running. It instead meant to find *your* pace above a walk and go with it.

So, today he walks up to me and mentions that he’s mad that no one ever told him that running did not mean running (I’m sure I said it to him a few times, but he never listens to me!). Finally he’s found something that he can do, that’s exercise, and that’s not a voluntary form of torture.

Nice!

So … if you’re scratching your head on all of this, let me explain.

If you’re trying out running for the first time these are your Dos and Don’ts …

  • Don’t think you should walk out the door and run like a Nigerian. My sister did this .. she started the Couch to 5k program and on the first day, at every interval she bolted like someone was trying to rob her. Silly rabbit was sore for days. Go slow .. there is no need to rush. Remember your legs and body are not conditioned for running.
  • Don’t have any expectations and don’t be in a hurry. The goal and the key is no pressure. Remember that it just needs to be better than what you do now. That’s it.
  • Do give yourself recovery time after running. Again, your body is new to this. Even if you run slowly those muscles are getting a new workout and need time to repair.
  • Take it slow, keep an open mind, and give it time. Take the expectations, pressure, and pace away .. try it xx amount of times and see how it goes. One time is not enough to decide on much of anything, I promise.

Years ago I used to run and was OBSESSED with my pace. I was always racing EVERYONE, especially myself. Running turned into disappointment and torture at one time until I through those out the window and decided to find the fun. Now, it’s something I love.

Will my pace every be as fast as before? Probably not. Do I enjoy the miles more than I did? Absolutely.
